In past posts I have written about bicycles, Bikes for Bikes – July 12, and signage, Keilhauer Sign – September 13, but this time I am going to write about bicycles as signage. This past weekend was the fall Beach Studio Tour in Toronto. The tour is advertised in magazines, local newspapers and this year the event was advertised in a new, very creative format – on painted bicycles. Many brightly painted yellow bicycles with yellow signage were positioned throughout the neighborhood. Some bicycles had baskets containing flowers and pamphlets attached to the handlebars. I thought this was a great way to advertise versus the usual and common A-Frame sign (the kind you usually see Real Estate open houses advertised) or flyers stapled to telephone poles both of which I never even take notice. The signs even had a QR Code for obtaining further information. Advertising is the key to the success of the event and the key to advertising success is getting noticed by as many customers as possible. I believe these bright, eye-catching, fun bicycles made you turn your head and take notice. The yellow bicycles were a wonderful departure from the ordinary and as Bill Moyers, White House Press Secretary, news commentator, journalist, once said “Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous”.

Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an international health campaign to increase public awareness of the disease and to raise funds for the research, treatment and cure. The pink ribbon was adopted as the international symbol of breast cancer awareness and now during October the colour pink in general denotes moral support of women fighting or having fought breast cancer. In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness I have compiled some pink items.
Dauphin – Perillo
The photo above was sent to me attached to an invitation. Any guesses as to what the photo is?? Last week I attended IIDEX/Neocon Canada which is Canada’s national design exposition and conference and Dauphin Human Design www.dauphin.com, one of the many exhibitors present, sent me this invitation to visit their booth to view their new products. The above photo is showcasing Dauphin’s Perillo, an eye-catching contemporary lounge chair. Designed by German designer Martin Ballendat, Perillo is created from one continuous, uninterrupted sheet of thermo plastic that forms the back, seat and armrest. The chair has a high gloss finish available in a ‘rainbow’ of colours. Perillo’s futuristic design and simple sculpted appearance had me wondering if this chair would be comfortable so I made a point of checking out their booth at the event. I sat in the chair and discovered that this chair was indeed quite comfortable. I immediately loved the look of the chair too. With its whimsical and unique space-age shape the chair appeared to be smiling at me and it made me want to smile too. I was reminded of the song by Louis Armstrong, “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you”. Such a ‘happy chair’, perfect for conference rooms and lobbies to keep everyone smiling!

Coloured Glass
I had the good fortune of spending almost 3 months traveling around Europe; to take in the sights, sounds and tastes of Europe. The fascinating history and architectural grandeur of England, France and Italy had me spellbound. I toured through many cathedrals, churches and abbeys admiring the architecture of these historical buildings. But it was the massive windows of beautiful ornate stained glass windows and their craftsmanship that was so striking. The coloured glass made me feel like I was looking through a kaleidoscope of history. In my own home I have 8 stained glass windows, they are not as grand but I do enjoy looking through them. Recently I have been noticing a lot of coloured glass for sale except the coloured glass is in the form of wine glasses. Now I am no wine expert but I thought that to truly benefit all the wonderful features of a wine the drinking vessel should be clear glass. Legs and colour are just two of many characteristics you note about a wine but would a coloured wine glass not alter that. I have always found that if I drank out of a blue glass my brain tells me I am drinking something blue. i.e. blueberry juice?? Green – limeade. Red – red wine when actually it was white wine. And a cold glass of milk in an orange glass??? Too confusing! Personally I would rather look through coloured glass than drink out of it. How about you?
Colour Ties
The importance of colour in respect to choosing the right one for your walls, furnishings, carpet, drapery, accessories etc. can become a huge decision. Colour means so much to us in our interiors. Colour can calm a space, enliven a space, and make a space feel larger or make a space feel smaller. The correct colour can make a room feel warm or keep a room feeling cool. Heck, the ‘right’ colour in our homes can just plain make us happier, and who doesn’t want to be happier. The psychology of colour in the branding of corporations is also very important. Tiffany & Co. is so well-known for their colour ‘Tiffany Blue’ that the colour is protected as a colour trademark and the colour is produced as a private custom color by Pantone Inc. Hermès is famous for their orange. And what company is best known for red? Coca Cola. Brown – UPS. So it was no surprise last week when President Obama’s decision to wear a purple tie (a departure from the usual red or blue) during his speech to the joint session of Congress last Thursday made the headlines. A lot was at stake for the President as he tried to sell his $447 billion plan. Creating a positive and trustworthy image amongst voters was important and apparently the colour of the tie would indicate this. Synonymous with royalty, wealth and status, the colour purple projects power and authority. In these financially unstable times one can only hope that the message of stability and trust was felt in the colour of the tie.

Labour Day Whites
Is white right after Labour Day? Unofficially marking the end of summer, Labour Day is thought of as the last day of the year when it is OK to wear white. Although considered somewhat of an old-fashioned idea and I am definitely not old-fashioned but you probably will not find me wearing white shoes or carrying a white purse post-Labour Day. But white does exist after Labour Day in so many other ways. I am speaking about white in home interiors. I would proudly display a Barcelona® Chair in white leather in my home any time.
Or a white Saarinen Table.

Or one of the beautiful white Jonathon Adler www.jonathonadler.com vases.

Is there anything nicer than serving a wonderful meal on white dinnerware?
Or having a stack of soft, plush white towels waiting for you after a warm soak?
And any time of the year I love to have a bouquet of white flowers in my home.

I love white picture frames with white matting and white and black art.

So….white is right after Labour Day!

DVF Home
While strolling around the Meatpacking district in New York City recently I came across this fabulous window display at the Diane von Furstenberg shop. It made me stop and admire – the unexpected colours, the undulating pattern, the mesmerizing feel, the true beauty of it. Like many of the sights in New York City I felt this window deserved to be photographed.
Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) is a Belgium-American fashion designer who is best known for introducing her iconic wrap dress in 1973 that influenced women’s fashion so greatly that it became part of the collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Inspired by her friend Andy Warhol, DVF is renowned for her signature prints of bright colours and floral patterns in her fashion collections. And as so many fashion designers seem to do, DVF now has a home collection, Diane von Furstenberg Home. DVF Home is inspired by contemporary art, nature and the fashion legends own iconic prints that energize the home with unexpected colours and patterns for a sense of vibrant individual style. Toss one of the Bright and Bold pillows into any room for an instant hit of colour and energy. The dramatic style that Diane von Furstenberg is so well-known for with her bold colours and pattern is now ready-to-wear and ready-to-ware.

My Plastic-Molded Chairs
For the past few weeks I have displayed on Modmissy’s Wish List a red Panton S Chair. The futuristic-looking plastic molded chair was designed in the 1960’s and its sculptural design makes it as much a piece of art as a functional piece of furniture. Very mod! I have not yet acquired one of these chairs but not all wish list ‘wants’ are fulfilled. But what I have recently acquired are 2 orange plastic molded chairs with chrome legs that resemble the Eames Eiffel Chair. (see post June 2 – Eiffel Chair). My chairs are vintage and in great condition. They were made in Canada by Jayden as indicated on the bottom of the chair and came from the office of the Law Society of Upper Canada. (If only chairs could talk!!) I originally thought the chairs would be fabulous as extras at the dining table but once I got them home I realized I could place them anywhere in the house and they looked great. In my guest bedroom for a pop of colour and to hold an overnight bag, in my home office to serve as a desk chair or in front of my white credenza as the colour contrast is really fab. So contrary to their previous location, my ‘Law Society’ chairs are no longer bound by rules or regulations as to where I can place them as they are now free to move about my home!
Fruit and Vegetable Inspiration
I recently visited a farmers market. It is that time of year when the selection of fruits and vegetables is so abundant and varied. My senses came alive by the sights, smells and the feel of the freshness. I ended up purchasing more than I could carry and quite possibly eat. As I strolled along the stalls of fresh produce I also noted all the colours of the fruits and vegetables. A cornucopia of reds and greens, yellows and oranges, purples and beige. I took photos of the produce and noticed the similarity between the colours of the fruits and vegetables to the colours of home interiors. So a trip to the farmers market may prove more valuable than just acquiring fabulous, fresh food because you never know where inspiration may hit. ‘Feast’ your eyes on the photos below!
